ACEY DEUCEYS NEWS

JANUARY 2010

Welcome to our first newsletter for 2010. Although we are still in December, YOU get the first look at the New Year’s version of the Acey Deucey News. Christmas will be here next week and on the 21st of December we will have our annual Christmas party Potluck Dance. The year has gone by so fast! This past fall we had Joe Satel from Texas call for us and Todd filled in while I was in California in November.

The new class is doing very well; we are ahead of schedule, almost reaching the half way point through A2. They will be in good shape to dance with some of the guest callers I bring in this coming summer.

Please continue to check out the club’s web site, www.aceydeuceys.com for an updated Fall/Winter schedule as well as other exciting information.

By now you have all heard the sad news of Mike Jacobs passing away. I am sure everyone has stories they can tell about Mike. I remember the first time I met Mike; it was at the National Convention in Louisville in 1983. Mike had programmed the callers. I put down that I can call C1 so I got several spots. That is not uncommon for a National, just check off that you call “Challenge” and you will be booked heavily. I remember meeting Mike in the caller’s room and he was frustrated because some callers had canceled out and he needed callers to fill in at the C1 level. He asked me if I would take on even more and I did. To me, Mike was one of the few higher challenge level callers who can sight call even the most difficult material. Mike was educated, and was also a very good teacher, of dancers and callers. He had the knack of being able to communicate difficult concepts to dancers and explaining “how to call” to callers and making all of it seem simple. That is a special gift. My last time with Mike was this past summer when I picked him up at the train station to call for us on a Monday night. We went out to dinner and talked about all aspects of the activity. Mike will be missed immensely throughout the activity. I am happy I got to work with him. I know Mike is looking down at us shaking his head, wanting us to be better, that’s just the way he was.

The fall months have been very busy for me. Besides my job, I have traveled to California three separate times, St.Louis, Seattle and Washington DC. I am enjoying calling around the country, the people are nice and the level of dancing for the Challenge groups is stimulating for me. I enjoy the “challenge” of writing new material. This winter I will be back in California in late January, Chicago and Florida in February and back to Chicago in March along with a trip to Maryland for some dances. The Tumbling Leaves Festival was a success and I heard Harvest Moon was a lot of fun as well. My Northeast Callers School in New Hampshire this past October was well attended and a success.

A few notes, beginning in January, the price at the door will go up to 9.00/PP and the last A2 tip of the evening will be a “Take No Prisoners” hot hash tip, no cards. Many dancers have asked for this and I think it will be fun to do. I am very proud of the Acey Deuceys, many of you travel to festivals and people certainly know we are out there.

The C2 class is moving along very nicely. We meet from 5-7 PM and everyone is doing a great job.

Some exciting news, there will be a first ever Cherry Ridge Festival next September with Don Moger, Ken Ritucci and Ben Rubright calling. We will have three halls (A2-C2) with C3A star tips at night. Todd Fellegy could not make it in 2010, but he will be back in 2011. Whenever Todd, Ben or I cannot make it, we will get a substitute for that year.

The New Years Party Dance for 2009 is only one week away! Make your reservations now! I will be sharing the dance with Will Larsen, longtime caller and friend of mine from Connecticut. Will has been absent from calling due to family issues but is getting back into it in a small way. He is an excellent caller so make sure you sign up for New Years Eve early.
